Does anybody know what this thing is? It's under the trunk of my 74 super beetle and has four hoses running out of it... one had come off and I had a bit of gas leaking on the inside.. is it a breather hose/piece or something?

That would be your "fuel trap". Part of your vapour recovery system. It's tied in with all those little breather hoses, and that charcoal canister under the right rear fender.

Sooo... it needed? And if not, how do I reroute the gas vapour lines or ...? There is quite a bit of gas smell when I fill up (gets normal at about 3/4 of a tank), would like to fix it...

Here's a picture I got from Super Beetles Only website that shows how to eliminate all that crap.

You'll probably need one of these

and one of these

to completely get rid of the gas fumes. Worked for mine.

Ok, a few more things... should this hole be covered on the air filter? I think it went to the old charcoal canister... and what's the black wire for in the other photo? I found it just hanging there...

The inlet port on the air filter should be capped off (if you're not using the charcoal canister). There's also a port on top of the fan shroud that would flow air through that canister. If you're deleting it, cap off that port as well.

No idea on your wire. Could've been anything installed over the last 40 years.
