Itís home. Time to assess how much metal needs replacing. From a project management perspective, Iím thinking lots.
Paul, I will be hitting you up for some advice. Like you, hoping that Camosun MIG course comes in handy, itís going to need it!
Not much of a story to this. I do know itís always been an island Westy. Years ago in a conversation with friends of ours they mentioned they also had a 74, and asked if I could help them fix it up when they were ready.
Shortly after this I was at Walmart and found a couple hot wheels orange buses, so picked up a couple and gave our friend one.
Fast forward to now, and he calls me out of the blue giving me first dibs at an offer. We went to check it out, made a deal we were both happy with, and here I am. I noticed the hot wheels bus in his cabinet, and said it was like I made an investment years ago with the hot wheels, and now itís a life size return of investment.
It came with a lot of receipts from Ellice, Peter Roberts, Bow Wow, obligatory How to keep your vw alive copy, and a little bit of wasp nests and rat droppings & scattered firewall insulation in the engine compartment.

Love it! I imagine it has the "dual" Solex carbs on an 1800. That's what I run on my '74 and it has decent power. You've just motivated me to get working on my two buses, one ready to drive and the other needs some TLC. Thanks!

I'm currently restoring a '71 orange Westy. Similar issues, but mine seems to have less rust issues. At the moment, just making it safe to drive. Great project! I will look forward to seeing your build.
The nose went under the knife today. Those electric shears are the s@%!
Bottom lip & side spot welds came off early enough, (rust Ďhelpedí)
Still need to drill around the fresh air grill to get that off & the passenger door to finish the strip left on that side.
2 of the 4 door hinge screws were put on Uber tight, thinking the weld-a-nut trick is in order here. Repeated heat & rust penetrant was no bueno.
Did a very rough fit of the new skin, & donít foresee any fit issues. Still need to make final measurements up the A pillar before cutting after removing the windshield.
Overall nothing in here I didnít expect. Happy the inner windshield piece is salvageable, and the rest in the area can be treated vs replaced. This one has good bones, just dealt a crappy hand being parked outside for so long.
Deconstruction continues. Going to get worse before it gets better.
Nose mount spot welds need more tidying, someone did some brazing at one point?! I picked up some conquest-like rust converter for the inner windshield piece, which needs a few patches cut & welded in before the new nose goes in.
Speaking of welding, finally got the trigger working and the matching nozzle tips, wire and tank filled. Welder works like new for 1/3 price, thank you FB marketplace.
While getting the nose prepped, took the crusty passenger dogleg off. Exposed more work needed, have to replace ~1-2? along the bottom floor edge, and fabricate a stepped lip edge that came off fused to the old dogleg. Just as well. The other side lip looks good.
Then that exposed some more rot in the B pillar area, more metal to replace (shocking). Good news is parts of the nose that was cut off will see new life as patches. May as well use that Hanover steel. The nose was mostly compromised from where the tire pushed against in and some of the edges, so makes sense to use original steel where possible.
Made a quick patch to replace a rotted part of the passenger A pillar.. The originals had filler & was shredded underneath. Will clean it up & recreate spot welds later, and do the other side for good measure.

Thanks Paul, no lack in motivation yet. I just remember to take breaks when things aren?t cooperating, etc. and come back later with fresh eyes.
No photos (this area isn?t very exciting yet anyways) but got the inner windshield patches and treated the area with conquest. I made up the matching driver side A pillar lower corner piece, holes all drill d to recreate spot welds. They fit great, and used some donor metal from the scrapped nose panel. Have to replace the doglegs first to get a couple spot welds in behind. As a side note, someone monkeyed in this area at some point, found brazing in different areas, unless that?s factory?
Picked up a HVLP sprayer from KMS, and going to shoot some epoxy primer in the area while it?s exposed, then get ready drilling holes & prep with weld-thru to install the new nose panel. Did a few test fits, clamps and a ratchet strap helped line everything up.
I ordered the one piece driver side rocker/lower panel piece a couple weeks ago and it just showed up Friday. Pretty sure it?s a Schofield piece from the UK, solid and deadnuts on for the original in quality & thickness.
