Sounds like you have animals trapped inside your engine.

That, or leaking intake *and* exhaust.

sounds like a WW 2 aircraft. crazy.

also, what did you do to overcome the starting issue. The past issue with starting the bus might be related to the crazy sound.

definitely not.

you have some mother leaks on that engine. i'd start with the getting the engine making those awesome sounds again and crawl under and check for exhaust stub leaks.

then - after you found the leak (and there is a leak), look on the intake / carb setup for cracked boots. those intake/carb setups are notorious for cracked seals to the head runners (right at the carb mount). also check the intake manifold gaskets. those are all fairly cheap parts - so if it were me - i'd replace the whole lot.

did something recently change on this engine? ie: you just install the carb?

I would agree with WCP. I am more familiar with fuel injection than carbs but that could be the engine spuddering due to air leaking. If you can locate the origin of the sound then that is half your battle. You may have to literally fit your head inside the engine bay to locate it or get a hollow tube/pipe and put your ear on one end and start probing. If it is a leak and you fix it your performance should go back to normal. Also maybe check your timing for rough idle? I would check for leaks first though.
