I did a mock up last night with a backing plate, drum and cosmics . You are right this set-up is too tight and will be to inboard . The rim is about 1 inch from the spring plate . The tire will be in contact with the upper body mount . What are your numbers .

Thanks

I can tell you what your backspacing needed with 165 tire I'll have to figure it out but I know what didn't work and what did I let you know tomorrow.

4 5/8" backspacing didn't work it ripped out the sidewall so I ground the welds on the rear rims pulled the center section of the rim back 7/8" then welded it back up I then had lots of clearance that put me at 3 3/4" which is the stock rim width all this 165 tire back spacing from a line across the edge of rim to back side of rim center also you may have added 10mm with those drums over the old ones maybe more.

Looking at my measurements how do you fit porsche bolt pattern rims on the rear of a type 1 short axle ? In the past I have only used stock back space rims (3-1/2"). Fuchs 5.5 " rims are 4.5 " back spacing , Cosmic are 4.95 " back spacing . Do you change the axle lenght ? A brm wide 5 bolt pattern rim have a 3.5 " back spacing .

If you did gain 10mm with the newer drums and you have enough threads on the studs a 3/8" spacer may work go as thick of a spacer as the threads will allow I'm not sure longer axle would fit on that trans I don't think you would want to do that.

Welcome Gerry! Let's see some pics of the car already!! Are you gonna hang onto the original beam? I'd like to stockpile some donors for future narrow jobs. Wink
