Hey guys, just bought an 83 VW bus on UsedVictoria and got fleeced pretty good. Was told that the engine was a rebuild and that everything worked well. (Was planning on taking the rig to Alaska this summer on a month long adventure). Anyhow, the bus ran well for a month or so (I'm in and out of town) and then started losing power. Took it into Beetle Auto and was told that the engine was rebuilt incorrectly, the top end basically needed a rebuild and the bill was going to be 7600 bucks. I can't afford that, and given that I paid 6500 for the van, was pretty shocked and saddened. Does anyone know where I can get this thing fixed on the cheap? I'm willing to put a Subaru engine in it, or even magic unicorns if it means that I can get her running again. One trip to Renfrew was enough to get bitten by the van bug, but I can't go any further without having it fixed.

Thanks,

Fatness

$7600 bucks to rebuild the top end of a piece of shit 1.9? That is beyond ridiculous. For $7600 I/you could swap a rebuilt 2001 or newer Soob 2.5 sohc

That's a brutal price! Gives Hoggs a call on the Malahat. He's a beauty and hopefully can give you a "good deal" compared to that.

Try ellice as well.

Wow thats too bad to hear! Did you talk with the past owner? That seems super expensive. Is there anyone on the board here who does side jobs? Im a newbie as well and have been looking for someone who I can take my bus to for the odd job that wont empty my bank.

ps: There is a guy out sidney way who has a bunch of Vagons that he swaps subaru motors in, maybe hes worth a call?

werke1.com Barry Guscott is the best around and very reasonable. He is in Richmond (South of Vancouver) and is a bus god. He specializes in buses especially vanagons
