i picked up an old (49) chevy and don't know pretty much anything about american drive trains.

I'd be happy to buy you a beer / coffee to pick your brain about engine/trans/diff combos.

thanks.

When I had mine I thought about putting a 350 in it.One major issue was steering,as it had to go "around" the wider engine.I saw one this summer that had been done beautifully. The steering linkage is available from"I Did It",a company I had not heard of before. When I took the old torque-tube drive train out of mine and put a 3/4 ton rear end in it,I was able to keep the transmission, just removing the torque-tube ball end and replacing it with the tailshaft housing from a later transmission. All the bolt holes were in the same places, the sort of thing Chev was known for.Interchangeability. One interesting feature of the torque tube set up was that the transmission oil would leak past the seal, down the tube and into the rear end, overfilling it.From time to time you had drain some out at the back and dump it into the tranny. My brother's 53 has 350 and auto, the whole truck being built on a blazer chassis. It's really nice to drive. He lives in Duncan, knows John Main. The truck is definitely worth looking at.Everything gets modernized all at once.
