I rebuilt a 1.9 TDI 1Z engine for my Suzuki Samurai. It has about 1000 miles on it and runs fine. However, there is a loud tapping that is always present. Checked clearances on lifters as per service manual and everything is good. I'm using the 5W oil as engine is completely rebuilt. I did used the old camshaft with new lifters. I have tried to find the origin of the tapping with a stethoscope but tapping is more obvious when listening with just my ears. Doesn't sound like a valve is hitting a crown and I would have expected a valvetrain problem by now if it were. I am hoping there is someone very familiar with the mechanics of this engine who would be kind enough to just give it a listen sometime.
