I've come to Victoria with my Dad's (original owner-bought in Germany at the factory and shipped over) '69 Westy and travelling down the Pat Bay I came off the throttle and...BANG! What is happening? Fixes? 2010cc / single 40 Dellorto

Welcome!

Backfire under deceleration makes it an exhaust leak. Check your connections. Check your gaskets & clamps.

Had the exact same problem with my 69 Buggy... turned out the surfaces between the heat risers and exhaust weren't flush. I cleaned off all the old gasket parts (looked like two layers left on over the years!) and now it seems to be ok. Will know once I insure it tomorrow!

Update: it was definitely the problem. No more backfiring at all.
