Non modified 1600, recently rebuilt. Clean and complete, including muffler and heaters, and all tin.

Now am I dreaming, or do these motors exist any more, and where can they be found, besides in my dreams. Id like to know who to talk to.

Im not rich but willing to step up for the right motor...when the time comes.

Hawthorne and I were talking about this. I'd be surprised if you don't find one for under $1500. For the amount of effort and money it takes to build a motor properly, plus having the motor itself, it's hard to imagine one selling for less then that.

Cip1 does sell new long blocks but they are closer to the 5k mark.

Another option would be to buy a rebuild able core and have someone rebuild that engine for you for around $1500 as greg said.

So very true... the new case i purchased 2 weeks ago ran close to $1300 after tax.

Over the last few years VW engine parts have spiked in price. My current 2275 build is going to be somewhere around $8k in parts (including carbs) when all is said and done.

So even if you rebuilt the block you had in an existing car, and you provided the labour yourself, how much would it cost?

I'll pipe in now, just reading over these posts. I listed a 1600 SP way back in January for $2000, reduced it to $1800. The few responses I received were low balls.
With over $2500 spent on parts and machine shop charges, not including my labour, I thought it was a great deal for someone. The days of a $1500 rebuild are long gone. Check out my add in the for sale section, it's long buried on page 3, I think. After 9 months, by word of mouth, I have a deal pending.
