Hi Clay

Yes, the orange hose just goes in the back.. it's open at the end, but no vacuum.

I will try with the oil filler cap off and see what happens. I read up on blow-by:

and learned quite a bit. Ideally, the stock air filter seems to be best with the vacuum hose from the oil filler. At the moment I have absolutely no vacuum so I can see why oil just goes everywhere.

So I found the problem! With Clay's advice I started poking around and found that the orange hose that goes from the oil filler was pressed flat between the clip of the valve cover and the valve cover, likely to keep it in place.

I also cut the orange hose down to about 5 inches and just hid it under the rear of the fiberglass body. It was full of slick gross ness from being clamped tight so I cleaned it out.

Runs great now! Even better than before and doesn't drop any oil... none!

So I'd like to get some more power for my buggy!

I'd like to replace the Empi carb... What would be the best upgrade without getting too crazy for the carb? I'd like a bit more lower end if possible. Appreciate your advice! And any links to CIP1 etc would be helpful in terms of what upgrades to do.

Not sure - but my main criteria is I don't want to add parts that require a lot of maintenance etc. Just a few simple upgrades that are literally bolt on if that makes sense? Is there such a think as a dual carb (as one unit?)

Ok here's what I'm really thinking... what do I need to do to make the front wheels of my buggy come off the ground when I chomp on it?! Keep in mind I can lift the front, it's super light!

bailing wire some cinder blocks to the exhaust. If that don't work try more horsepower

I was thinking of adding some extra weight to the back...but it would make for some scary driving otherwise!

I insured the buggy yesterday, changed the oil this morning, gave it a once over (ie looked at it for an hour) and took it out today. Runs like a top - almost.

Wasn't there a movie where a VW bug sat in a field for 50 years or so, and then somebody found it and it started right away?

Battery is almost dead so will replace that... however couple of things I hope you VW wizards will know.

The shifter has a FZ stamped on it, but to be frank, it's kinda terrible. Second gear always wants to grind into reverse, and it's impossible to find first gear. I have a 74 bug I drive as a daily driver and it shifts perfectly. Is it the FZ shifter, me or ? I think a stock one would be best...?

And the motor has AJ stamped on it (as well as a "WE" on the left side..) so I believe it's a fuel injected block from 75-79. It has the EMPI dual stage 32/36 carb on it. But the distributor is a 021 905 205 (I can't remember where I got it from, the buggy originally had a 009) - I looked online and it shows it with a vacuum can on it, but mine doesn't have one. What's the best distributor for my setup? A single vacuum advance? It definitely doesn't have the power I believe it should.

Oh, and the fuel gauge suddenly stopped working. Is that a fuse or something more involved?
