Not just a Victoria thing. This car was pulled off the road years ago, and wasn't allowed back until it was inspected. The same as an out-of-Province inspection though. Very thorough

|
|
Well, today my wife and I...yes that's right I said my WIFE and I spent the afternoon on Canada Day working on the coke bug.
Got the front end up off the ground with the help of a log and some wood spacers, dang it is low, and got the wheels off to start work removing the rotten fenders on the front.
Pulled the gas tank to discover that the "new brakes" that were installed never included the master cyl. so that will have to be addressed.
Found a hole where the heater vents enter the drivers and passenger sides that I can fit a hammer head through from the outside Welder will be required for some reconstructive surgery. Its ok, its a work in progress.
The wife (Wendy) said she doesn't want it as low as it is right now (agreed) and that we should air bag the $hit out of it...of course a husband should never disagree with what a wife wants
got the left front almost off, have a couple of stubborn bolts to deal with, one that the tab under the decklid has come unattached One that at some point got torqued off too hard and there is just a hole. All fixable.
We also discussed putting the coke bug on a trailer and putting it behind my suburban and bringing it to the pancake breakfast and cruise about town hey, there would be a VW there!
The work goes on, have a line on a possible pan, but now the challenge will be getting the body bolts off. One of the previous owners HEAVILY coated the car with undercoat and it is THICK.
Started a blog and am taking photos of the process as well.
66cokebug.blogspot.com just in case anyone was interested in following, or even if you want to come over and turn a few wrenches...I will need someone that can weld soon.
HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Experienced vapour lock for the first time ever, I think. Monday afternoon, drove out to Sidney in the "59" along the backroads, back into Victoria, through downtown, Esquimalt, etc.
At about 3 hours running time. Just as I'm heading home, the last downhill before I get to my driveway, she quits. I had just enough momentum to coast to the top of my driveway. Fuel in the filter was just bubbling away, and the pump was way hot to the touch.
After about 1 1/2 hrs, and an oil change, she fired up.
Couldn't have happened in a more conveninent spot.

Weird. Can this be avoided by having your fuel filter located beyond the engine compartment?

Worked on getting my split on the road finally. Worked on the rear drums. Both flex lines where completely collapsed, replaced those with stainless steel braided jobbies. Drivers sided wheel cylinder was one piece of rust that used to be a wheel cylinder. The friction material was completely gone from the shoes. The passenger side was better. It now has 50% of it's brakes operational. just need to fix the fronts and bleed the whole system. That much closer to getting another split bus on the road!

I cut out the 1978 Massey Ferguson windshield seals from my 66 bus. I figure my field of view should double without them.

Made some more glacial progress with the 40 horse, test fitting some odds & ends. Air cleaner cleaned up pretty decent. Should be interesting going from a 1915 back to stock 1200. Just as well, the brakes are stock to match.
