Just heard from Geoff at Airspeed that one of our greatest just died in a car accident. Word has it he was street racing a Scion and at about 90MPH hit a couple of dips in the road and smashed into another car in traffic. Mark was killed instantly and the women he hit is very messed up. This is all I know for now.

I have met him once at GCVW Show and his brother who I believe works at Rancho. This all happened just before the Calssic.

For all who don't know he is the famous guy for building the SSB. Super S**T Box.

So sad for his family and the VW community Crying or Very sad

As heartless as it may seem, my sympathies go with the lady he hit, and her family. After all the deaths and media about street racing I find it hard to sympathize for someone stupid enough to endanger others because they drive irresponsibly, hitting 90 MPH in traffic.

Sorry to be a stick in the mud, but I had to say it...

Yah, Sad as it is, Speeding Kills. All should learn forom this horrible incident and take their racing to the rack where it belongs.

Garden Grove Street Race Ends in Death
From a Times Staff Writer
June 11, 2006

A street race in Garden Grove turned lethal Friday night when a Fullerton man died after losing control of his car and crashing into one coming from the opposite direction, police said.

The driver of the oncoming car, a 56-year-old Westminster woman, was badly hurt. She was taken to UCI Medical Center, and no information about her condition was available Saturday.

The Fullerton resident, 46, whose identity was withheld until his relatives could be notified, was racing his white Volkswagen Beetle against a black Toyota Scion northbound on Western Street just before 8 p.m., officers said. The Beetle veered into southbound lanes as it entered the Lampson Avenue intersection and collided with the woman's Nissan sedan.

Police were looking for the driver of the Scion, which was described as having tinted windows and a spoiler.

I find that after reading this posting I feel torn by two things.
Loss, and disgust...

We all love cars and speed is a very BIG part of that love.
But, as we all know the risk is far-too real to be involved in things like street racing.

Families suffer, communities...(IE, VW)...mourn, and people die.

At 17, I had to say "Thanks for the memories" to my lifelong friend who was decapatated when he crashed his Mazda in his hunt for speed thrills.
I was there....it was not easy to watch.

I truely feel for the By-standers family and friends....as for Mr. Herbert, he lived for fast cars, and should have had access to any number of
ON-Track activities to saticfy that need, without dumbing-down his passion by taking out in traffic.

I usually sign my posts with Happy Motoring...but not this one.

I agree with Mike and Chris on this one. It's tragic that Mark had to die, but he should have known better. Road racing is illegal for a reason.

Does anyone else find it a little funny how Chris said what he said (Which I totally agree with) yet his location is "Side of the road.... Speed traps Suck!!"
